Birth Time Explained

One recorded birth. Two calculation clocks.

Keep the time on your birth record. Your time zone identifies the actual instant; true solar time is an optional calculation convention, not a replacement birth record.

Time zone: what did the clock mean?

Civil time is the local clock time recorded at birth. An IANA time zone uses the birth date to resolve the historical UTC offset, including daylight saving where applicable. A repeated clock hour needs clarification; a skipped hour cannot simply be accepted.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur use UTC+8 for these modern examples. Older births can have different offsets: Kuala Lumpur on 23 May 1979 used UTC+7:30. Never apply today’s offset to every historical birth.

True solar time: where was the Sun?

True solar time adjusts the resolved clock using east/west longitude and the equation of time: the date-dependent difference between apparent solar time and a uniform mean solar clock. Longitude alone gives mean solar time, not true solar time.

Correction (minutes) = 4 × east longitude − historical UTC offset (minutes) + equation of time

East longitude is positive, west negative. Resolve the original time zone first; do not treat the corrected solar clock as another civil timestamp or subtract daylight saving twice. The app requires an explicit longitude and a known birth time.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur: an hour can change

Fictional births on 23 May 2000, using approximate city-centre longitudes and the app’s declared rules. These are teaching coordinates, not a claim about your exact birth location. True solar time is shown to the nearest second; corrections are rounded to two decimal minutes.

Dragon Hour covers 07:00–08:59; Snake Hour covers 09:00–10:59 in the chosen calculation clock. Not everyone born in either city gets a different Hour Pillar. Near midnight, a corrected date can also change.

What changes in each system?

BaZi: Day and Hour use the selected clock. The Day changes at that clock’s midnight; late Rat Hour stays on the same calendar day. Year and Month solar-term boundaries and Luck Pillar onset retain the original birth instant.

Zi Wei: the same clock and longitude are shared, but Zi Wei keeps its own Chinese-calendar, leap-month and late-Rat rules. An hour or date change can affect its chart; the BaZi Hour Pillars above are not Zi Wei chart outputs.

Life Gua and numerology retain the original birth instant or recorded date without solar correction. Reading this guide changes no profile or chart.

Different chart does not mean better prediction

Accurate recorded inputs and historical time zones improve reproducibility under the chosen convention. Different schools may choose civil or solar time. Astronomical clock correction does not establish predictive accuracy, and neither option guarantees a more accurate life reading. Keep the convention explicit rather than selecting whichever chart feels more appealing.
